Adult neurological therapy
Apraxia of speech therapy in West Sussex
You may know what you want to say, but getting the sounds out can be difficult. Ember SLT offers individual speech and language therapy for adults with apraxia of speech, based in Worthing and supporting the confirmed West Sussex service areas.
Understanding apraxia of speech
Apraxia of speech affects planning the movements needed for speech. It can follow a stroke or brain injury and can occur alongside aphasia or dysarthria. It is not caused by weak speech muscles.
Your experience may include difficulty starting words, sounds coming out differently on different attempts, or longer words being harder to say. An assessment helps understand your particular communication needs.
Support for speech and getting your message across
My work in adult neurological rehabilitation includes motor speech difficulties. Therapy is shaped around what is useful to you in everyday life, with time to listen and a pace that feels right.
As explained in Ember’s existing apraxia guide, speech and language therapy can support practice of speech movements and useful words. Pictures, writing or communication aids may also help you get your message across. The approach is discussed following assessment; there is no single programme that suits everyone.
Support for families and carers
The people around you can make a difference by giving time, asking what helps and checking that they have understood. With your agreement, family members and carers can be involved in appointments and practical communication support.
I offer assessment, therapy and family support in English and Farsi. You do not need to explain everything perfectly before making an enquiry.
